Like 2018 before it, 2019 was another stellar growing season in Napa Valley, producing slightly smaller yields displaying a marvelous blend of energy and richness. Late spring rains gave way to a moderate growing season, with few extremes and consistent morning fog. The vintages long hangtime culminated in an especially warm fall that teased out further concentration to complement the fully developed flavors and fresh acidity. Overall, the 2019 vintage gave us beautifully balanced, richly flavored and brightly focused wines.

• Wine Enthusiast: From the producer’s Lovall Valley estate, this white is given time in mostly concrete egg, with a small amount of French oak influence. Richly textured and complex, with a velvety mouthfeel and ample ripeness, it shows dense layers of anise, apple and pear.

After some persuasion, David Grieve convinced Vance Rose that the Lovall Valley vineyard was exceptional and from that collaboration we now have the Grieve Family Winery Sauvignon Blanc! Lovall Valley occupies a unique position geographically, climatically, viticulturally and historically. Located between the towns of Napa and Sonoma straddling the county line just north of Carneros, Lovall Valley is only 1.25 miles long and less than a half-mile wide and is the last pocket before the Mayacamas Mountains give way to Carneros and the San Pablo Bay to the south. Accessible only from Sonoma, yet located in Napa County, Lovall Valley sits at approximately 650 feet above sea level and is bordered on the west by Arrowhead Mountain. Huichica Creek runs the length of the valley bisecting the Grieve Family Vineyard, supplying it with moisture and extending the growing season.
